Socialising

Lockdown is a dim and distant memory - we are no longer wearing masks outside, the shops are open, all schools are back. Canberra has hit about 93% of the over-12s vaccinated, case numbers are plummeting and the international borders are open ... not that I am planning on going anywhere just yet! Content to get some more coast time in. Anything else seems excessively ambitious (and likely to change).

We had a gently social weekend with a long-planned picnic for a friend's birthday on the lawns outside the Yacht Club on Saturday. Which is probably the worst place in Canberra to have a picnic; it is very windy and despite the sun it was bitingly cold. But we enjoyed ourselves and it was lovely to catch up with everyone and hear their news. Most of our friends have retired now - including some quite recently - and none of them have a single regret, how unsurprising. A few more years for us but I am looking forward to it.

Sunday was quieter - gardening, painting, shopping for art supplies - until a different bunch of friends rang and suggested that we have fish and chips ... on the lawns outside the Yacht Club. Why not we said, the picnic rugs were already in the car. Luckily Sunday was not quite so windy and cold.

I tried to get pictures of the seagulls in flight (little sky rats love spilled fish and chips) but not much success. They were coming uncomfortably close to my husband, who has been targeted by bird poop before. I also tried to get a picture of the four paddleboarders in Halloween witch costumes slowly paddling across the lake, but we were too far away. A shame, because they looked super cool.

  1. Gosh, that looks beautitul. So glad you're out of lockdown. We too can't really face the idea of going anywhere much - too much possible hassle and there are lots of lovely places to go in Britain. But one day, maybe, we might venture ABROAD again. On the other hand... we could just look at pictures of pretty foreign places... It's strange but possible to think that we might never get abroad again, at our advanced ages. Ah well. We'll see.
